Have you ever wondered about the kinds of conversations that are held between hair stylists and their clients? Who sees their beautician as part therapist, part cheerleader?
From debut author Maggy Clifton comes a new novel, In Franklin's Chair: Private Conversations, that gives readers a chance to "overhear" conversations between Franklin, a four-times married hairdresser and his unnamed client. Listen in as they share stories and discuss issues such as incarceration, marriage, religion, the loss of manners, and sex and dating in the 21st century.
Inspired by Langston Hughes’ Jesse B. Semple newspaper columns published during the 1950s in The Chicago Defender, Clifton presents vignettes of genuine, humorous, almost Socratic in nature dialog as Franklin and his client share details of their lives while trying to adjust to the new world around them.
MAGGY CLIFTON was born and raised in New York. After her discharge from the military, she settled down and worked in New England for 30+ years, with the last 13 years as a college-level educator, writer and tutor before relocating to Northern Virginia where she now resides.
